Takudzwa started playing rugby in high school after he was pressured by friends to try the game. He made quite a name for himself as an athlete, running the 100m dash in 10.5 seconds, setting a high school record. He played rugby for the Mashonaland Club in Zimbabwe, and once he came to the U.S., he played for the rugby team in Plano, Texas, making the Texas select side and eventually the U-19 National Team. He went on to represent the U.S. on both the National Sevens and XVs sides and was honored with the ‘Try of the Tournament’ with his run against South Africa’s Brian Habana in the 2007 RWC.

Takudzwa graduated from Vainona High School in Zimbabwe in 2003, where he played rugby, tennis and ran track. He is the oldest of three boys and has been a big fan of the Springbok since he was 12 years old.

Being recognized with the 'Try of the Tournament' really opened doors for Takudzwa Ngwenya professionally. Shortly after, he was offered a contract with Biarritz in France.
